Growth in the Russian composites market is outpacing global figures as a result of government
measures to expand the adoption of composite products beyond the military and industrial sectors.

JEC Composites Magazine: How is
the composites industry in Russia
developing?
Viktor Evtukhov: At present, Russia, just
like the rest of the world, pays a lot of
attention to the development of high-tech
industries, and the composite materials industry holds a special place among them.
Over the past 60 years, composite materials have catapulted from the aerospace
sector into the 'civil' industries and are now
so firmly integrated into our daily lives that
we often no longer pay attention to their
presence in the products and structures
around us.
At the same time, it must be noted that
composite materials have a combination
of unique characteristics, which makes
them indispensable and highly relevant
in designing a wide variety of products in
various sectors. Hence, in spite of a small
market share as compared to conventional construction materials, the modern
composites industry plays a significant
role in any developed economy of the

world. Furthermore, it has to be taken into
consideration that the global composite
market today is a kind of a phase interface
because it connects diverse industry sectors while also being a growth factor for the
chemical industry, for instance.
The Russian composite materials industry
has its own history and key features that are
associated with a powerful military-industrial complex and, above all, an advanced
aerospace sector. In this connection, over
the past six years, the Russian government
through the Ministry of Industry and Trade
of the Russian Federation has been promoting transfer of existing technologies
from the military-industrial complex and
mass-scale introduction of composite
materials into civil sectors of the economy.
And we can already see that this approach
has met with considerable success, as statistics indicate a significant growth in the
Russian market for composite materials
that outpaces global figures.

demonstrated a manifold growth.
And while in 2013 the volume of the composite sector in value terms was RUB 22.1
billion, in 2018 it reached RUB 65.3 billion
and continued growing in 2019. These
figures clearly indicate that the threefold
growth of the market volume in five years
is far ahead of the global trends of 4-7%
annually, depending on the country. In
Russia, the annual growth is 24-30%.
The figures I am citing are the result
of a successful collaboration between
manufacturers, large consumers and the
government, and the current government
policy provides some reassurance for
future stable growth. And while at the
moment the share of the Russian segment
of the global composites market is a mere
1-1.2%, we expect to double this figure
by 2025.

What is the current size of the
composites industry in Russia?
V.E.: As noted earlier, the Russian composites sector has been going through
major changes in the past years. The government has been undertaking measures
