Predicting the performance of chopped
composite components through simulation

The benefits
FiRMA (Failure in Random Material
Architectures) is a simulation method
developed by Engenuity to tackle the
difficult task of predicting the structural
performance of randomly-oriented fibre

made from C-SMC. This simulation
method was designed to unlock the true
potential of chopped fibre composites by
providing designers with visibility of the
part's predicted performance envelope,
enabling them to minimise part design
time, part mass, time-to-cure and associated costs while achieving the required
level of performance with a known level of
confidence.
Many geometries and loading scenarios
offer opportunities for chopped materials.
However, there are certain parts that
should never be created with them. A tie
bar is a good example. The direction of the
load and the form of the geometry mean
that there are no redundant loadpaths in
the section and so the tie bar is likely to
fail at a low load. The longer the part, the
more likelihood of a lower failure value.
Many parts have multiple loading directions both in-plane and out of plane and
these would be best suited to the attributes
of a chopped material.
There are many examples in-between
where the power of this approach will
quantify the benefits available.

used in the automotive sector, usually in the form of glass SMC (sheet
moulding compound). Carbon SMC (or
C-SMC) is now recognised as a way of
achieving even lower part mass by offering higher specific strength and stiffness
compared to glass.

As confidence grows in their performance, their utilisation
increases. However, fibre costs have stagnated and more costeffective fibre usage is needed to expand applications. Chopped
materials offer a solution to this problem - whether using virgin
or recycled fibres, C-SMC mouldings produce negligible scrap
and an immediate increase in usage efficiency. The bottleneck
to the adoption of these materials has been an inability to
reliably predict the resulting part's performance. Engenuity
offer a solution to this problem using their FiRMA technique.
