Can Europe develop a mass
market for electric vehicles?

In this paper, Inovev analyses the current state of the
electric vehicle market, the key change factors, and gives
an insight of this market's future in Europe. This article
is a summary of the company's comprehensive study:
"Development of electrified cars in Europe".

he electric vehicle market has
been growing throughout the
world over the past decade
(Figure 1).
With more than a million vehicles
a year, China is the main driver and
player in this market (Figure 2),
specialising in full-electric vehicles
(BEV - Battery Electric Vehicles). In
Europe, BEVs are growing, but their
volumes remain fairly low. However,
for automotive manufacturers oper-

ating in Europe, developing BEVs
can be a significant way to meet two
major challenges: the need to reduce CO2 emissions and the ban of
thermal vehicles in dense agglomerations in major European cities and
regions.
But are the conditions really in place
for a real growth of this market?
What are the challenges for an effective development of the electric vehicle market in Europe?

of the short-term data and analyses may have become obsolete.
But the main fundamentals and trends will still be there:
- Need for people to move from a point to another;
- Need to lower CO2 emissions;
- Need for more breathable and silent cities.
What may change is the behaviour of consumers in the short, medium and long term:
	
- Short term (2020 and 2021):
	
- Consumers will have less money to spend;
	
- Governments will have to restructure the economy differently, on new bases, and subsidizing new mobility ways and
developing the necessary infrastructure will not be a priority.
	
- Medium and long term:
	
- Consumers may change their behaviours, in fear of another crisis, and continue (partially or totally) the teleworking experience.
