American motorcycle brand
Harley Davidson has come up with to
promote its line of e-bikes. As a matter
of fact, the well-known company also
manufactures electric bicycles, an initiative that aims to foster a new generation of two-wheeler riders around the
world. We couldn't miss out on the
opportunity to take part in this small
revolution and present the changes
that are taking place and those yet to
come in the field of mobility.

Let's remember that transportation,
which represents 14% of global CO²
reux@jeccomposites.com emissions, comes in fourth place according to the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It
follows Electricity and Heat Production (25%), Agriculture, Forestry and
Other Land Use (24%), and Industry
(21%), with Other Energy production
(10%) and Buildings (6%) placing
after. In particular, road transportation with its trucks, buses and cars, is
responsible for 74% of CO² emissions.
Air transport accounts for 12%, with
maritime transport coming in at 11%,
and all others at 3%. The railway sector
is not absent from the list of polluting
players, either, with most of its trains
running on diesel fuel. We could take
the analysis one step further to look
into the CO² emissions per person or
per metric ton-kilometre (tkm), but
this is not the intention. Today, no industry can boast that it doesn't impact
the environment, and efforts must
therefore be made across all sectors.
The issue of population growth must
then be added to this situation, which
is not very good overall. From a total
population of 7.6 billion at this time,
we'll reach 9.5 billion by 2050, with
Asia alone showing growth of over
50%. Over the same period, the proportion of people living in agglomerations will grow considerably from 55%
to more than 70%. This means that
the urban population will increase by
around 2.5 billion people. It's yet another challenge to face, and even more

so when we consider the pandemic that
we are traversing at the moment. For all
that, thankfully, there are a number of
reasons to be optimistic and to believe
that there are not only problems but
that progress is being made. These are
breakthroughs which, when you add
them all up, begin to form a solution.
And so, while 100 million vehicles
were produced in 2019, we notice that
the role that passenger cars play in urban and peri-urban environments is
lessening, in favour of mass transportation. This is even the case for long
distance travel. Overall, projections
assume that the proportion of internal
combustion engine (ICE) vehicles will
decrease, as well as CO² emissions. To
illustrate this trend, take the example
of Renfe, the Spanish rail company. It
has entered into an agreement with
Texas Central to develop a high-speed
railway line between Dallas and Houston, the first of its kind in the United
States. More recently, at the beginning
of April, and in another field altogether,
HDF Energy and ABB Group signed
an agreement to work together to manufacture high-power fuel cell power
systems (more than 1MW) suitable for
on-board marine applications.
We can't deny ourselves the pleasure
of concluding with Harley Davidson,
which seems to be truly inspired by
electric technology. To usher in the
launch of the new Livewire - a real motorcycle, but this time an electric one
- it has proudly announced that "the
loudest sound you'll hear will be your
heart racing". Though it's just one symbol among many, this one is particularly powerful in the eyes of the world.
And what about composites in all this,
you'd ask? Why, they're everywhere!
For one reason or another, they are
involved in every project. We can
therefore affirm that the revolution has
begun, even before mentioning all the
developments selected for this special
edition, which we invite you to discover now without further ado. We wish
