Fuelling the future of
mobility with hydrogen
Hydrogen mobility is a topic of growing interest and is now
seen as a viable alternative to combustion and all-electric
vehicles. Air Liquide presents six countries at the forefront
of this energy revolution where the company is deeply
involved.
D
uring the past 50 years, Air
Liquide developed unique
expertise enabling it to
master the entire hydrogen supply chain, from production and
storage to distribution and the
development of applications for
end users, thus contributing to
the widespread use of hydrogen
as a clean energy source, for mobility in particular. The company designed and installed more
than 120 stations around the
world to date. Hydrogen is an
alternative to meet the challenge
of clean transportation and thus
contributes to the improvement
of air quality.
Used in a fuel cell, hydrogen
combines with oxygen in the air
to produce electricity, emitting
only water. It does not generate
any pollution at the point of use:
zero greenhouse gases, zero particles and zero noise. Hydrogen
provides a concrete response to
the challenges posed by sustainable mobility and local pollution
in urban areas.
Japan: the birthplace
of hydrogen mobility
Japan has been interested in hy-

drogen mobility for several decades. This avant-garde approach
means that today it is one of the
most advanced countries on the
matter. This momentum is driven by the government, as well as
automotive manufacturers and
infrastructure suppliers.
The Japanese government's strategic road map for hydrogen was
presented in 2016 and supplemented in 2017 by the "Basic
Hydrogen Strategy" sought by
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe,
which set forth a series of milestones: 160 stations and 40,000
vehicles by 2020 and 320 stations and 200,000 vehicles by
2025. If Japan is a model student
in hydrogen mobility, it is also
because Japanese automobile
manufacturers took an early
interest in this energy source.
Mainly Toyota (with the Mirai
model) and Honda (with the
Clarity) continue to develop hydrogen initiatives and are looking to have 800,000 vehicles on
the roads by 2030.
Last March, Air Liquide Japan
(ALJ) announce the launch of
the Hydrogen Demand Study
Group (HDSG) in Chubu. As
a core member of HDSG, ALJ
will work closely with each of
the group's entities to lead initiatives, in addition to continuing
its endeavours to assist Japan's
efforts on the way to a hydrogen
society.
