While the yachting sector, and the
marine industry on the whole, has
been impacted by the enduring health
crisis, it remains nonetheless dynamic
and innovative. Surely new ideas and
new champions will emerge from this
crisis.
Not long ago, at the beginning of
October, Dutch company Vabo
Composites delivered an imposing
single-piece cabin for a 77 m-long
superyacht. The cabin measured 23
x 11 x 5m. By choosing to design this
piece in carbon composites, the team in
charge of engineering and calculations
achieved weight savings of 40 % in
comparison to an aluminium structure.
That's what I call a result that everyone
can applaud.
This month's dossier will also be the
opportunity to discover, or learn more
about, the MAMBO 3D-printed boat
made with a continuous-fibreglass
thermoset material. This Motor
Additive Manufacturing BOat was
digitally crafted using patented 3D
printing
technology,
specifically
Continuous Fibre Manufacturing
(CFM), explains Gabriele Natale,
President & CEO of MOI Composites.
Traditional moulds are not used,
making it possible to cut out a major
step and to head straight for mass
customization. At a time when
customized offers are gaining traction,
this is a tremendous asset for standing
out from the crowd.
In addition, we'll introduce the first
series model of a hydrogen-powered

tender. Though this luxurious 40-foot
motorboat is reserved for an exclusive
clientele, it foreshadows how yachting
could be clean and environmentallyfriendly
in
the
future.
The
demonstrator for this new generation
of boats was invented by Chloé Zaied
and built at the La Ciotat Shipyard in
the South of France. It utilises hybrid
hydrogen-electric technology from
Energy Observer Developments.
I could not conclude without
mentioning the Flax 27 sailing yacht
designed by Greenboats, based in
Bremen, Germany. This dynamic
company's expertise lies in developing
products made of natural fibre (NFC)
reinforced
sandwich
composite
structures.
These are just a few examples
demonstrating the sector's buoyancy,
but that's not all. They testify to a
growing awareness by the sector that
new user aspirations must be taken
into account and even surpassed if
a company wishes to be ahead of its
time. Moreover, with parts that are
bigger than ever, hulls shaped without
moulds, clean propulsion systems, and
even water-repellent natural fibres,
these achievements reveal a new breed
of entrepreneur, one that cannot
imagine continuing to manufacture as
was before. These are ideas that will
break through the COVID cloud and
give us a glimpse of a promising future,
whose horizon is clearing. Enjoy
