ICC: an open-research innovation platform for composites

Construction of next-generation infrastructure
systems using innovative materials
The Centre of Innovation (COI) programme by the Japan Science and Technology Agency
(JST) aims to establish an innovation platform through industry-academia collaboration,
and to realize radical innovation that is difficult to accomplish on their own. As an innovative platform, ICC aims to realize a flexible society with long-term value, one that will span
the centuries, by implementing innovative materials in society to create next-generation infrastructure systems that reduce social costs and create new value.
Currently, ICC focuses on the development of pultruded FRP (BF/PP) rebar for concrete
structures. The goal is to achieve a moulding speed of 1m/s (3,600m/h) of lightweight,
long-lasting, corrosion-free and low-cost FRP rods, an attractive candidate for a variety of
applications. Focusing on their non-magnetic properties, the first application goal for the
near future is to use them in concrete structures for Japan's new railway system. (Figure 3)
Another focus is the development of FRP panels for building walls and floors. ICC is working on providing fire resistance by combining them with a non-combustible insulation covering material. The Centre is developing a new matrix resin with a Tg of 250°C or higher,
even when moulded by VaRTM at moderate temperatures such as 80°C, to meet the requirement of load-bearing performance at 200°C in case of a fire. ICC is also developing
a high heat resistant resin with an inorganic skeleton that can withstand 500°C, but yet is
applicable as a matrix for composites.
Some of the main project outcomes include the CFRTP rod, which is Japan's first and only
CFRP product created the new Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) as a seismic reinforcement material. (Figure2)
The CFRTP sheet is a good example of spreading to fields not initially envisioned. The
sheet's excellent mouldability made it possible to produce a fine honeycomb structure to
replace the conventional metal spike pins of sprinting shoes for Tokyo Olympics 2020. Due
to their great formability and high mechanical properties, both the rod and the sheet won a
JEC Innovation Award.

International projects with Germany
The long-term close cooperation between ICC and CFKValley (now Composites United (CU)) has resulted in
joint international projects. As high-volume low-cost
manufacturing technology is required to meet the rapidly expanding demand for aircraft in the aviation industry,
the roll forming technology developed by Daido Kogyo
Co., Ltd. and Tsudakoma Corporation's continuous
compression moulding (CCM) technology are promising processes for producing aircraft fuselage profiles.
From this background, two three-year technical projects
with German and Japanese partners were set up jointly
under the coordination of ICC and CU, and officially
started in June 2020 on the topics of CFRP recycling and
thermoplastic profile production for the aviation and automotive industries.
The key goal of the HiPeR project is to improve the
price-performance ratio of recycled CF materials by
improving the mechanical performance of the semi-finished products through a high degree of alignment between fibres.
The objective of the ThermoPros project is to develop
technologies for the high-volume production of thermoplastic CF-reinforced profiles, such as fuselage frames
and stringers.
The projects are funded by BMBF (German partners)
and individual regional subsidies (Japanese partners).

Director of ICC

Professor Kiyoshi Uzawa is the director of the Innovative Composite Centre (ICC) at Kanazawa Institute of
Technology, Japan, where he has been since 2013. After several years of product development in private companies, he began his academic career as an assistant in Tokyo. One of his current research focuses on the development
of application technology for composites in order to realize next-generation infrastructure systems using innovative composite materials and manufacturing processes. Fascinated with FRP, his motto is " Light is Right! " .
