To promote the first round of
challenges, a series of workshops
were organised by the
partners to inform participants
about the project and
the technical and training
support services provided by
RIGHTWEIGHT to accelerate
the development of innovative
solutions.

RIGHTWEIGHT
support programme:
- Intended for manufacturing
SMEs from the automotive
and aerospace sectors who
want to further develop their
lightweight solutions (TRL)
and reach the market.
The best
of both worlds
Challenge 1: Repair
of RTM composite parts
Composites are frequently
used in lightweight products
such as airplanes.
However, there are no real
specifications on how composites
produced
by
resin
transfer moulding (RTM)
should be repaired after damage.
Airplanes operate in demanding
conditions where
they can be damaged by impact
in certain situations.
Currently, there are no clear
aerospace specifications on
how a damaged composite
part should be repaired.
The main objective of this
challenge is to present and
validate a composite repair
methodology for Tier 1 aero
suppliers that fulfils the requirements
of their materials
and aerospace parts. The
solution will give a second
life to damaged components,
reducing the environmental
impact by limiting the need
to fabricate new parts.
Challenge 2: Lightweight
automotive parts based
on post-consumer
recycled plastics
To move towards a circular
economy approach, it is fundamental
that upgraded recycled
plastics from post-consumer
components are ready
to be employed in automotive
parts. The automotive
industry needs to contribute
to the EU's circular economy
approach. Therefore, plastics
from post-consumer components
represent an important
new resource with cost-effectiveness
potential when appropriate
supply chains are
established.
Challenge 3: Sustainable
green composites for
aircraft cabin interiors
The growing awareness of
environmental pollution and
the depletion of oil-based resources
has encouraged researchers
to use renewable
materials based on natural
resources. The challenge's
objective is to propose new,

at least 50 manufacturing
SMEs from the automotive
and aerospace value
chains by helping them improve
their technology readiness
levels (up to TRL7)
and reach TRL7 and the
market.
- Support services (services,
travel and accommodations)
worth up to €45,000
per SME, aimed at improving
the TRL of solutions up
to TRL7 and bringing them
closer to the market.
