Whether for ensuring our survival (and
our comfort), our mobility, our ability to
transform our environment and to power the
ever-increasing number of accessories we use
on a daily basis, energy is a central concern of
industrial and post-industrial human culture.
" Energy " is a concept that is at the heart of
a multitude of preoccupations, since as of
the Industrial Revolution, our relationship
to fossil energy has aff ected the planet. Our
modern needs only add to the pressure of
the demand for energy, and consequently, on
power generation, which must continue to
" clean up its act " .
From now on, drastically reducing the
carbon footprint of human activity shall be
accomplished by rationalising our relationship
with energy and accelerating the transition
to renewable sources. Strong commitments
made recently in favour of decarbonisation,
such as the impending stop to fossil energy
fi nancing, open the door to other sources like
wind, hydraulic, geothermal, and alternative
fuels. Th ese are the priority sources that
have been identifi ed to preserve our societal
models.
As the COP26 was being held in Glasgow,
Scotland, humanity has kept vigil at the
bedside of our planet - recognizing its
precarious position in the face of pervading
environmental changes taking place at both
the local and continental levels. While it is
clear that we fi nd ourselves before global
factors that we have yet to suffi ciently control,
this international meeting is an opportunity to
set our greatest asset into motion: innovation.
Th e composite materials industry, though
still young, has a unique chance to establish
its maturity through the development of
new materials and new, tangible applications.
Composites are positioned at the ready
to optimise our energy consumption in
applications like thermal insulation for
buildings and vehicle weight reduction. Th ey
can help produce cleaner energy through

onshore and off shore wind power projects,
tidal energy, capturing and converting strong
and medium-intensity currents on land
territory above sea level. Th ey can also be
instrumental in transporting it and making it
available more quickly (fuel/LNG/hydrogen
vessels). To continue decarbonising, even
nuclear power uses composites in the
centrifuges that serve to separate Uranium
isotopes.
Composite materials hold all the cards to
facilitating the transition to green, and the
fi rst signs of the energy shift from fossil to
renewable are becoming more obvious.
Electric car manufacturer Tesla has thus
joined the very closed circle of companies
whose market capitalisation surpasses 1,000
billion US dollars. In the wind turbine fi eld,
Vestas is pushing back the boundaries of
production capacity by commercialising a
115.5-metre-long blade, for a record 80 GW
per turbine yearly, in optimal conditions.
Nevertheless, we must be careful not to fall into
the trap of producing energy that could end up
being more grey than green, when the various
carbon footprints of the constituent parts
are left unaccounted for. Th e many possible
paths and achievements that use bio-based
materials are a start to eff ectively responding
to this issue. A signifi cant challenge remains
to be resolved on composite materials end-oflife,
which cannot be ignored if we are to take
an exhaustive view of the topic.
