A growing number of governments
around the world are committing
to the goal of climate neutrality by
2050. Decarbonising road transportation
is an essential part of
these strategies. Replacing metal
components with lightweight materials
is an established route to reducing
a vehicle's fuel consumption
and CO2
emissions and can also
enable car makers to integrate additional
systems and devices without
increasing the vehicle's overall
weight. Lightweighting trucks improves
freight efficiency.
The mainstream automotive sector
has been steadily increasing its
use of composites in lightweighting
applications,
but manufacturers
of electric vehicles (EVs) have a
greater need for lightweight materials
and this market is growing fast
globally, supported by climate policies.
The EU plans to ban the sale
of new petrol and diesel cars from
2035, the US government wants
50% of new vehicles sold in 2030 to
be electric, and China has also set
ambitious targets.
In EVs, composites help offset the
weight of the battery and electric
motor, improving the vehicle's
range. Electric vehicles also require
the development of completely new
parts, such as battery casings, and
allow designers to think beyond the
constraints of traditional ICE vehi "
