Automated filament winding lines are helping to make hydrogen
a viable alternative to fossil fuels in the automotive and
aerospace markets. Cygnet Texkimp combines high-speed filament
winding and automation to manufacture large numbers of
hydrogen pressure vessels quickly and cost-effectively.

expert Cygnet Texkimp is helping the
transport industries meet climate-neutral
targets with a high-speed automated filament
winding system to manufacture hydrogen
tanks in large volumes for the automotive,
aerospace, and marine markets.
Ambitions
to halve carbon emissions by
2030 were reasserted at the COP26 summit
in November 2021. Dozens of countries
have so far pledged their intentions through
zero-emission strategies that rely on the use
of hydrogen, battery-electric, solar, and other
alternative fuels to replace fossil fuel-powered
internal combustion engines (ICE).
The move towards emission-free travel has
gained momentum in recent months with
increasing support by global governments
convinced of the importance of hydrogen in
achieving their targets. Many countries have

supply chain uncertainty caused by global
political and humanitarian crises is intensifying
the need to invest in alternative sources of
reliable energy.
With all of these plans contingent on the
development of viable hydrogen-enabling
technologies, the rapidly-emerging hydrogen
economy holds many opportunities for composite
technologies.
An automated
filament winding solution
Cygnet Texkimp's solution was developed to
manufacture pressurised vessels and pipelines
to store and transport pressurised hydrogen
for cars, trucks, aeroplanes, and boats.
Working alongside OEMs (original equipment
manufacturers) and as part of two UK
government-backed technology initiatives,
the company's objective has been to develop a
tank manufacturing solution that can produce
vessels in sufficient volumes and speeds to
satisfy the considerable future demands of the
market while simultaneously providing the
traceability and quality assurance capabilities
required for the storage of hydrogen.
Cygnet Texkimp developed the solution
as part of its role in the three-year, £40m
ASCEND collaborative R&D programme led
by Tier 1 aerospace supplier GKN Aerospace
to accelerate the development of composite
materials and process technologies, improve
the adoption of composite technologies and
boost production rates to meet future highvolume
requirements in the aerospace and
automotive markets. The technology is also
the result of the recently-completed Project
Henry consortium - a six-month project
led by Tier 1 automotive supplier Moveero
(formerly GKN Wheels and Structures) to
develop hydrogen-enabling technologies for
automotive applications.
Central to the system are high-speed,
high-precision filament winding and robotic
filament winding machines. To further
enhance its productivity, capacity and system
performance, the winding cell is fitted with a
range of automated handling and data management
technologies as an integral part of a
full filament winding line.

Achieving volume through automation
Analysts agree that meeting the demand
for hydrogen tanks and pipelines in terms
of manufacturing capability will be a major
challenge for the industry. According to the
Hydrogen Council's 2021 Hydrogen Insights
