ULTRATHIN PAPER SENSORS FOR
TECHNICAL APPLICATIONS

Today's printing methods can be used to create electronic
devices by printing on a variety of substrates to directly
integrate functionality in various lightweight and flexible
materials such as plastics, textiles, non-wovens and
even paper. This makes it possible to integrate a wide range
of electronics or sensors in any object, sizing or material.
Sensors
printed
on ultrathin paper
allow undisturbed
observation
of
resin flow and
cross-linking
in
complex
components
for
engineered wood,
skis,
sledges
or wind turbine
blades using impedance spectroscopy.Sensors printed on
highly-porous materials have hardly any influence on the
properties of composite materials, regardless of whether they
are made of wood, carbon or glass fibre. The matrix resins
penetrate through these sensors within a few seconds. Sensors
on highly-porous, ultrathin paper can be completely integrated
into complex shapes without impairing the properties of
composite materials and parts.

More and more energy or data transfer wiring has to be embedded
in composite materials instead of being post-positioned, and
then hidden. It is the same for sensors or functional elements
such as antennas or de-icing devices that, in addition, have to be
connected together. On the other hand,
production efficiency requirements for
thermoplastic or elastomeric materials
imply working with an initially flat surface material that needs to be postthermoformed. Tibtech developed a brand-new lightweight stretchable
connecting bus that withstands high-temperature processing and can
be embedded and preconnected to the different electronic elements,
sensors or antennas that will be positioned in the composite material.
Being highly stretchable, the Condustretch Bus can withstand the hightemperature post-thermoforming deformation process (up to 240°C)
although completely embedded within the thermoplastic material.
Unlike standard non-stretchable flexible buses, the flat, but open,
shape of the Condustretch Bus is engineered to allow very easy flow
and penetration of the thermoplastic material throughout its structure
to avoid possible delamination. Furthermore, its stretchable behaviour
and functional yarn conductor design provide an excellent vibration
and thermal fatigue behaviour. For de-icing applications, Tibtech also
developed an embeddable Thermostretch electro-heating version.

NON-CONTACTING OPTICAL
STRAIN MEASUREMENT
