DESIGN TRIM MADE OF STYLIGHT® AESTHETIC S C245

ROD PLACEMENT TECHNOLOGY
FOR BRIDGES BY BALTICO

During the past decade, BaltiCo developed a unique CFRP
fibre placement technology called Rod Placement for complex
3D-component structures. A structure consisting of long fibrereinforced thermoset materials with or without frames is built
up step by step using an especially
developed robot system.
Due to the perfectly optimised fibre
orientation and the additive material
placement method, the solution
saves resources and has a very high
lightweight construction potential
with significantly reduced costs. The
method is applicable especially for large-volume products and has
practically no limitation in size.
As standard, BaltiCo is using the technology for the production of
windmill blades and complete solar ships. But it is also very interesting
for larger applications in civil engineering and architecture, such as
bridges, towers and house components, opening a completely new
window for new design visions.
The first bridge based on this technology was delivered in 2012 in the
Netherlands. In 2018, BaltiCo built the first small bridge with approval
in Germany, followed by a bigger 24m-long one. Bridges over 50 m
are in the planning stage. Such bridges are manufactured as individual
modules and connected in a simple way directly at the installation
side. They can be installed in one piece. Due to their high stiffness and
extremely low weight, the bridges can have a very large free span.

BIOCOMPOSITE STRUCTURAL
ELEMENTS FOR ARCHITECTURE

The Department of Biobased Materials and Material Cycles
(BioMat at ITKE) at the University of Stuttgart presents a series
of natural short- and long-fibre biocomposite elements for
construction applications, developed in the course of research
projects BioProfil (FKZ: 22021516) and
LeichtPRO (FKZ: 22027018) funded
by the Federal Ministry of Food and
Agriculture (BMEL) and managed
by the FNR agency. The products
are partially funded by the German
Research Foundation (DFG, project
number: 390831618).
The prototypes range from multifunctional sandwich panels for interior
applications, through outdoor façade panels to whole long-span
structural systems. All the parts are made from natural fibres from annually
renewable resources and crop residues. The developed biocomposites
demonstrate mechanical properties similar to those of timber products.
This creates a potential for replacing timber - a long-time renewable
material - in various applications. The additive fabrication techniques
used to produce the elements made it possible to speculate about
the possibilities of automatized off-site fabrication of whole building
elements. Computational design tools are used to simulate the structural
performance of the elements on the level of single lignocellulosic fibres
and thus to implement topological optimization at the early design
phase. Then, the exact fibre orientation in parts can be re-created using
contemporary fabrication techniques, such as tailored fibre placement.

Hyundai was looking for a solution to create an aesthetic carbon trim in one production step, such as back-injection
of the fixation points on the formed StyLight Aesthetic C245 trim and subsequent painting. INTOPS provided the
solution with the Inmold Coating process. The formed back-injected and coated carbon trim can be installed directly
from the mould into the car.
StyLight Aesthetic S makes it possible to produce highly aesthetic design trims coated directly in the mould. The outstanding surface quality of
StyLight Aesthetic S C245 is enhanced by the brilliance and depth of the PANADUR clear coat. In addition, StyLight is protected against scratches

PLASTIC-LINED TANK CONTAINERS FOR CHEMICAL TRANSPORT

Most tank containers are currently made of stainless steel. A negative aspect of steel tanks is
their high tare weight, which reduces the maximum loading capacity of the tank due to maximum
weight restrictions. Depending on the application, steel tanks often require an additional lining to
protect them from corrosion. Thus, logistics companies are interested in new solutions to increase
tank effectiveness while decreasing weight.
Agru's customer Oy Fluorotech Ltd. and Admor Composites Ltd. revolutionized the transportation
industry by developing a lined fibreglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) tank container in an innovative way.
Compared to a standard steel container, the FRP container can be up to 40% lighter, which represents up to 1600kg more payload per transport.
To achieve the required chemical resistance to the media, Admor Composites Ltd. uses the PE 100, ECTFE and PFA fabric-backed semi-finished
products produced by Agru.
Another positive effect of the plastic lining is that the tank surface is easy to clean. This makes it possible to change media without risk of crosscontamination, while reducing cleaning time, cleaning agent consumption and cleaning waste.
Composite transportation tanks also have an ecological impact due to their lower carbon footprint. More media can be transported in one load,
which increases efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions. www.agru.at
