Aquatics Guide - 2021 - 7

from the required implementation date of December 2009. One bit of VGBA trivia that many venues
have forgotten about - drain covers expire.
When VGBA was passed, the law specified that
drains must have a manufacturer-set expiration date.
When looking at the major manufacturers, we generally see a range of five to seven years, with some
possibly going as long as 10 years. This means that
venues should proactively maintain compliance
with the law in all aspects, but specifically, by changing out expired drain covers.
The aquatics industry has worked through various outlets to spread the message of expiring covers.
However, it is easy for individual venues - especially those not connected to a larger organization
- to lose track of their expiration dates. Turnover
in staffing, changes in leadership, financial priorities
and difficulties, and the large amount of work requiring oversight make it easy for this critical detail
to be overlooked. It is vital that venues continue to
be compliant with VGBA to ensure user safety.
So, this begs the question - how do I know if
my covers are expired? Drain cover locations can
make it difficult to check. Being underwater, you
may need scuba equipment to check the covers or to
have replacement covers installed. For venues that
perform an annual drain and clean, this obviously
makes things much easier. The best way is through
documentation. Manufacturers send documentation
sheets with the covers to help facilitate this. The documentation should be stored in an easily accessible
location for this purpose, as well as for inspections.
The bottom line? If you're unsure if the drains
are expired and you can't find documentation, consider them expired and replace them immediately.
