Popular Play Spaces
The children in our study used all the pieces of equipment
available to them on the playground. Their play was active
and full of movement. The most popular places to
play actively, based on the number of times children visited
the specific pieces of equipment, were high-capacity,
stand-alone pieces of equipment. Children visited pieces
of equipment with the highest capacity most.
In interviews, children told us the playground was a
place where they enjoyed spending time. Children ages
5 to 6 said they like spinning, swinging and climbing
with friends. Children ages 9 to 10 said their favorite play
equipment were pieces that many children could play on
at the same time. The children ages 11 to 13 also said that
the playground was a favorite place to be. Prior research
also has shown that children of this age group believe
that playground equipment is " cool " if it is well-designed
and if it does not look like it was made for younger children
(tinyurl.com/3ajhmw3d). Children in this age range
said that they value free playtime outdoors because they
suffer from headaches due to too much screen time required
for school.
