The NRPA Public Policy Committee would like to encourage you to join other professionals and citizen advocates across the country March 16-19 in Washington, D.C., for the NRPA National Legislative Forum on Parks and Recreation. The recession has brought unprecedented threats and challenges to parks and recreation agencies across America. Media articles about the elimination of a recreation department or the commercialization and sale of parklands are all too common today. Despite the spate of bad news, there is good reason to be optimistic about the future. Thanks to the advocacy efforts of NRPA and its 21,000 members, there are unprecedented opportunities for parks and recreation agencies in the 2nd session of the 111th Congress: ■■ Legislation has been introduced that would provide full and dedicated funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund state assistance program for the first time since the landmark legislation's enactment in 1965. ■■ .A bill that would authorize funding to be provided for our nation's stressed urban park systems, the Urban Revitalization and Livable Communities Act, was introduced in November and is gaining much support in Congress. ■■ The No Child left Inside Act would expand environmental education programs and reconnect children with nature and the outdoors.
