Janna Rankin
connected to NRPA members? Has the newly created
Networks program increased this connectedness?
Of course, all of the social networking opportunities make
it much easier for members to connect to the leadership and
also to each other. I have so many friends and colleagues in every constituent group in NRPA, and I have kept in close touch
with the members through them. I have also enjoyed attending
several of the meetings of the state parks and recreation associations, particularly those in my neighborhood (Colorado,
Utah, a tri-state conference with Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming,
the combined North Dakota / South Dakota, and New Mexico
conferences). At each one of these I was able to talk with members about their issues and concerns. Naturally, our primary
networking opportunities still come from the Legislative Forum
and Congress. However, the Networks program is absolutely
critical to ensure that the various constituent groups that make
up NRPA remain flexible and open to both new ideas and new
people. And that they do not become isolated from the members of other constituent groups whose experiences and interests may enrich their own.

You've always been involved in parks and recreation,
as a professional, as an educator, and as a civic leader.
What led you to volunteer over the years? Did you have
a sense of how far your service would extend?
Volunteering for worthwhile civic activities is simply part of my
heritage. Both of my parents were very active in our local community, and I have always felt it was a privilege to play a volunteer role either locally or as part of a national organization.
I never gave a thought to how or if I would progress in NRPA. I
just enjoyed being involved. I suppose that my attaining the position of Chair of the Board has as much to do with longevity in
the organization as it does with any particular organizational
ambitions.
What are your thoughts on the merging of the
president's position with the chair's position? Should
NRPA members expect to notice a difference?
This decision by our Board makes so much sense. For the future we will alternate the position annually between a professional and a citizen advocate. If our membership notices any
difference at all, it will be that the structure of NRPA governance
makes more sense. It has always been somewhat confusing to
have two individuals leading the organization. I have never seen
any significant gap between the goals and values of volunteers
and professionals; we are all in this together.
During your board tenure, did you feel sufficiently

What are you most proud of from your tenure on the
NRPA Board of Directors? Is there anything you would
do differently?
I have a lot of pride in the camaraderie and strong sense of
shared purpose that exist within the Board and between the
Board and our exceptional professional staff. I am particularly
gratified by the good working relationship I have had with our
CEO, Barbara Tulipane, who is not only a very efficient and effective manager of the organization, but who has also become a
truly dedicated and passionate advocate for the parks and recreation movement.
As far as what I would do differently-well, I think that I need
some distance to have the perspective to answer that question.
During this year, I have just been able to keep abreast of emerging issues. I think that during my year as Past Chair, I may have
some more time for reflection.
What advice do you have for local advocates
considering national service?
Step up! We have scheduled a special session in Atlanta for
members who want to get more involved with NRPA. We are
constantly looking for advocates at the local, state, and national
levels who feel passionately about our mission and who are willing to devote time and energy to this wonderful field. We invite
new voices to the discussion.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
This is a time of great stress in parks and recreation, as it is in
virtually every aspect of American life. I hope that when we look
back on this difficult economic period, we will be able to say that
our movement played as significant a role in uplifting the nation's
spirits and giving our people joy and meaning as it did during
the even more turbulent era of the Great Depression.
