Project Briefs Dewberry, as a subconsultant to Greenman-Pedersen, Inc., will provide environmental and engineering services for the Garden State Parkway shoulder widening between mileposts 83.6 and 99.5 in Ocean and Monmouth Counties, New Jersey. Dewberry’s work includes environmental analysis and documentation, environmental permitting, public involvement, geotechnical engineering, and drainage engineering support for the $300-million project. IES Engineers-Dewberry has been selected as the Master Facility Plan Engineer for Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. Mission Health System, a 735-bed medical center complex, is currently in the process of implementing multiple facility development projects pursuant to their Facility Master Plan. The firm’s role is to support the ongoing building and infrastructure capital improvement projects by providing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing designs, specialized for the healthcare industry, to facilitate efficient use of capital project time, funds, and management. Mission Hospital has plans for nearly 100 projects over the next decade, which includes a 215,000square-foot on-campus medical office building, a 175,000-squarefoot, five-floor vertical bed tower expansion, and a central energy plant expansion for additional chiller and generator capacity. Tim McCormick, PE, CFM, head of Dewberry’s hazard engineering services group, recently presented at the 6th Annual ESRI Surveying and Engineering Summit in San Diego, California. McCormick’s keynote presentation addressed Dewberry’s GeoFIRM platform. His talk focused on this state-of-the-art flood mapping technology which was developed to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) $1-billion Flood Map Modernization effort by optimizing use of higher resolution topographical information and automating compliance with FEMA’s data standards. He also discussed how GeoFIRM fits into FEMA’s future vision for Risk MAP beginning in fiscal year 2009, which will focus on the identification, assessment, communication, and mitigation of flood risks across the nation. Dewberry was presented with ESRI’s Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award on August 6, 2008, at the 28th Annual ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, California. ESRI cited Dewberry’s approach of applying GIS solutions to better serve the world as the reason for selection. In highlighting the firm’s innovative approach to problem solving, ESRI noted Dewberry’s GeoFIRM solution as an example. GIS combines hardware and software to allow users to visualize information geographically. Dewberry’s GeoFIRM solution permits GIS users to more rapidly and accurately create flood insurance rate maps for FEMA. Safety issues will be addressed for this 16-mile stretch of the Garden State Parkway which is prone to serious accidents. 7
