Construction Underway on Neponset River Bridge Upgrade Rehab to Meet Latest Seismic Code Requirements The rehabilitation of the Neponset River Bridge, which carries Morrissey Boulevard (Route 3A) over the river between Boston and Quincy, Massachusetts, is not only improving the integrity of the aging bridge, which first opened in 1971, it will soon help “quake-proof” the entire multi-span structure. The bridge will be one of the first in the state to meet the latest seismic code requirements through the rehabilitation process. Dewberry, which has been providing engineering inspection services to the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) since 1995, was tasked by DCR with inspecting the bridge, performing a structural analysis, evaluating rehabilitation and seismic retrofit schemes, and preparing final to numerous capacity and detailing deficiencies in the bearings, pier columns, and pile foundations. The team identified seismic isolation as the most suitable retrofit scheme, allowing for the reuse of the pier columns and foundations. Hundreds of new isolation bearings are being installed in order to meet the current seismic code requirements. Challenges have included maintenance of traffic along the busy commuter route. The contract documents provided load criteria, specifications, and recommendations for temporary underpinning to support the superstructure while the pier hammerheads are reconstructed. “Dewberry has used its expertise to help guide this major rehabilitation project from planning through construction in a professional and efficient manner,” says Mark Griffin, project engineer for DCR. “The schedule has been vital as we want to minimize the impact to daily traffic.” J.F. White Contracting Company is serving as the contractor for the $20-million rehabilitation effort, which is anticipated to be complete in mid-2009. Originally completed in 1971, the Neponset River Bridge carries six lanes of traffic between Quincy and Boston, Massachusetts.
