Benefits of Supporting Coastal Ecologies Estuaries are formed when freshwater flows into and mixes with ocean saltwater, creating estuarine bays, sounds, lagoons, harbors, marshes, and inlets. In addition to helping control erosion, estuaries sustain thousands of species of animals, plants, and micro-organisms. A healthy estuary also helps to maintain water quality, thereby supporting a myriad of fishing communities, and tourist and recreational activities found in many coastal areas.
