The engineering solution—implemented to address the most flood-prone stations first—remedies a perennial problem for the authority during periods of heavy rainfall. The August 2007 event caused the emergency closure of more than 30 stations. A team of NYCT engineers, along with representatives of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which oversees NYCT, determined that the city’s storm sewer systems were backing up into the track and station areas. MTA/NYCT tasked Dewberry with solving the high-profile dilemma while avoiding disruption to ongoing track operations.
