exact location and elevation of individual trees or groups of trees within a stand, as well as determine a potentially more effective limitsof-disturbance line. GPS can also help an arborist determine the overall health of a stand of trees and its potential response to proposed development. By using visualization software the arborist can demonstrate how a landscape plan may develop—from its conceptual stage, through the project’s inception, and in the ensuing years—as the implemented plan matures. The landowner gains a better understanding of the evolution of a landscape, and an arborist can accurately determine, for example, how plants and trees will affect sight lines along roads and intersections 10 years after planting. Into Practice: Ashburn Village In the northern half of Loudoun County, Virginia, is Ashburn Village, a mixed-use development started in 1987 and consisting of over 5,000 residential units on more than 1,500 acres. As the development reached the 20-year-old mark, the community association recognized the need to do a comprehensive review of its landscape to determine the long-term viability of the trees and vegetation. The association also wanted to assess long-term maintenance requirements and associated maintenance costs, and determine if the landscape was still appropriate to the needs and uses of residents. Ashburn Village contracted with Dewberry, and the firm’s certified arborists performed a complete survey of over 60,000 common area trees and plants. The team also assessed Ashburn Village’s extensive asphalt trail system, developed a number of neighborhood “pocket parks,” and rehabilitated and redesigned the common area landscapes in existing housing areas and between community buildings. Dewberry’s arborists and landscape architects used visualization software throughout the project to show the community association and the board how the landscape improvements would be placed and how the landscape would mature. The resulting work has helped the community association reduce its maintenance costs. The landscaping program will also be more appropriate to the needs of the community over the next 10-20 years. “As communities age, it becomes a more difficult process to revitalize them, and homeowners associations typically don’t have the skill set necessary.
