Jersey Shore University Medical Center Transforms a Former Landfill Property Into a State-of-the-Art Healthcare Campus
The largest hospital in Monmouth and Ocean counties, Jersey Shore University Medical Center has been serving area residents for more than a century. The center, which has been located on its present site in Neptune, New Jersey, since 1932, has been challenged in recent years with increasing demand for its services, including a steady rise in emergency care cases that now reaches nearly 65,000 a year.
Faced with the need to modernize and expand its facilities in order to meet the needs of the region’s growing population, administrators weighed the pros and cons of building new facilities at Jersey Shore’s existing site against a relocation to a new, more expansive property. Although the 26-acre site was hemmed in by development, including the adjacent Neptune High School, Jersey Shore officials were reluctant to cast off the center’s prominent location, which had served the community well for decades. In addition to the surrounding density, the site presented environmental challenges that would also need to be addressed. Much of the campus expansion would occur on a portion of the property that had once served as a landfill, and stormwater from the site would have to be carefully managed to protect the nearby Shark River.
A Healing Mission
Despite these concerns, as well as the need to reorient the campus to improve circulation and access, Jersey Shore administrators opted to stay at the current location and embark on a $300-million expansion. Construction included a new emergency department and trauma center, sized and equipped to handle 100,000 annual visits; a diagnostic and treatment building with six new surgery suites; renovated inpatient areas; several new cardiology labs and a laboratory department; and a new parking garage.
