In January, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) conducted its phase two charrette to plan and program a self-sustaining, carbon neutral facility prototype.
Led by a team of Dewberry architects, engineers, and environmental specialists with expertise in justice facility design, the team will ultimately recommend sustainable opportunities for a mid-rise federal correctional institution (FCI) at Leavenworth, Kansas. The first charrette explored energy issues existing in FBOP facilities, and Dewberry presented opportunities for sustainable methodologies and technologies. Dewberry has also introduced and continues to work with FBOP representatives to develop concepts for the FCI prototype, which will ultimately help the agency reach the Executive Order 13423 goal of implementing the 2030 net-zero-energy building requirement. During the third phase of the project, Dewberry will develop mandatory alternate concept proposal documents, based on FBOP’s current design program guidelines, as well as diagrammatic drawings for the site in Leavenworth. The team will also revise technical design guidelines according to the sustainable methodologies and technologies implemented at the site.

At a recent reporting session in February with the FBOP, Dewberry representatives review concepts for a carbon neutral facility prototype that may best help the agency meet its sustainability goals.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized the St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission with a PISCES Award for the new Methane Power Co-Generation and Digester project at the Marlay-Taylor Water Reclamation Facility in Maryland. The award recognizes the reconstruction and improvement project, designed
by Dewberry, for minimizing methane emissions while reducing energy costs without a significant expansion onto previously undisturbed land. The project captures methane created during the wastewater treatment process and uses the gas to generate more than 25% of the plant’s electricity, as well as substantially lowers the heating fuel used by the plant.
