New Center to Support Bio-Based Industry R&D
Laboratory Will Also Demonstrate Sustainable Strategies
The new Sustainable Energy Technology Center (SEnTeC) is now under construction on the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) campus in Danville, Virginia. Scheduled for completion in November 2011, SEnTeC is anticipated to become the lead research and development (R&D) organization for growing a bio-based industry in Southern Virginia.
Closely aligned with the national agenda for a bio-based economy, SEnTeC projects will encompass development and introduction of biomass crops, assessment of conversion technologies, development of co-products from conversion processes, and feasibility studies for the placement of bio-refineries. In addition to serving as an energy research building, the facility will also function as an energy technology demonstration site and will showcase alternative energy concepts. Working in association with Lord, Aeck & Sargent and Pergion Engineering, Dewberry designed the 26,000-squarefoot, two-story building to achieve LEED® Gold certification. SEnTeC has received partial funding from the American Public Power Association and will showcase the largest demonstration of LED lighting in North America. Other energy technology design elements include a rooftop photovoltaic array, a cistern to harvest rainwater for irrigation, and advanced sensors for building climate control. “There’s a genuine camaraderie among Dewberry’s team that, I believe, improves upon the dialogue and concepts that are being developed in our planning sessions,” said Liam Leightley, executive director for the IALR. “And each of the design discipline experts is adding valuable input towards developing a world-class research facility for Danville.”
