Updated Data Helps Communities Prepare to be More Resilient
Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the Northeast in late October resulting in billions of dollars in damages for coastal
communities. The existing flood insurance rate maps do not reflect the current coastal flood risk for the New Jersey Coast as
they are generally decades old in this area. In order to help these communities get back on their feet, the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) needed accurate, updated advisory flood zones and elevations, and fast.

floods. By elevating higher than ABFEs, property owners
are also typically given a flood insurance premium that is
significantly lower than building below or to ABFEs.
