Informing the Public
State and local officials must tackle major decisions
Once the data was assembled, the question among FEMA
and the RAMPP team became how to best distribute the
information to the public so that it was understandable
and actionable. By leveraging FEMA’s new GeoPortal (ESRI
Online), Dewberry was able to develop a user-friendly
application that, based on an address the user enters, can
query the GeoPortal behind the scenes to mine all the
relevant data to the user, simplifying the whole experience.
This application, plus other information and data, was
embedded within the existing site previously developed for
FEMA Region II (www.region2coastal.com).
RAMPP supported community engagement by
having coastal and outreach specialists available at
FEMA’s community officials meetings and public
open houses and responding to inquiries submitted
as they plan the rebuilding and recovery efforts
throughout local communities. Property owners with
damaged or destroyed assets face critical choices about
rebuilding their homes or businesses. Decisions made
today facilitate a safer, stronger future for communities,
families, and business owners. Reliable and timely ABFE
data is one way FEMA is helping decision makers ensure
that New Jersey and New York coastal communities
recover smarter and stronger, becoming more resilient
and better able to withstand future storms.
The New Jersey Governor’s Office adopted the
Advisory Mapping issued by FEMA for all affected
communities in New Jersey, reflecting buy-in on the need
for this data and the need to guide re-building efforts in
order to mitigate against future flood risk.
