An Ambitious Roadway Widening
New Jersey Turnpike Authority Sets Bar High for Improvements
Three years into construction, the widening of the New Jersey Turnpike is one of the most visible and ambitious roadway widening programs in New Jersey’s history. At 35 miles, the $2.5-billion program comprises nearly 30 percent of the New Jersey Turnpike’s total length with the potential to ease travel for more than 230 million vehicles on the roadway each year. Dewberry is supporting the New Jersey Turnpike Authority in multiple phases to bring the program to completion. Starting with preliminary design and environmental services for over 20 miles of the widening program, Dewberry has now completed final design of Design Section 6 at Interchange 8, Milepost 66.8 to Milepost 68.3 in Mercer County, with an estimated construction cost of $180 million. Design Section 6 involves widening the New Jersey Turnpike from six lanes to 12 lanes and the reconstruction and widening of Routes 33 and 133, as well as converting the at-grade intersection of Routes 33/133/Milford Road to a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI), the first in New Jersey. The new 10-lane toll plaza and utility building at Interchange 8—which has been designed for LEED certification and provisions for open

construction support of Design Section 6. In addition to coordinating construction phasing with the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Mercer County, and East Windsor Township, Dewberry assisted with utility relocations; in one instance, surveying the route and providing test pit data and geotechnical settlement analysis to Colonial Pipeline Company to safely delineate the relocation of a 30-inch steel pipeline. “Dewberry is the design engineer for one of the most complex Design Sections in the widening program,” says Lisa Navarro, project engineer with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. “The Dewberry team prepared five construction contracts for this section, including the relocation of the Interchange 8 Toll Plaza to the opposite side of the mainline from its existing location. Additionally, Dewberry worked expeditiously to issue the program’s groundbreaking contract in the summer of 2009. Dewberry has been a valuable member of the widening program team from inception to date.”
