Sustainable Center Brings New Technology to Danville
Targeted to be One of the First LEED®-Gold Facilities in Southern Virginia
On April 25 the Sustainable Energy & Technology Center (SENTEC) had its grand opening on the Institute for Advanced Learning & Research (IALR) campus in Danville, Virginia. SENTEC conducts research and development (R&D) projects that are directed toward the growth of a bio-based industry in Southern Virginia. The projects will encompass development and introduction of biomass crops, assessment of conversion technologies, development of co-products from conversion processes, and feasibility studies for the placement of bio-refineries into Southern Virginia. The new facility will support a research and development program that closely aligns with the national agenda for a bio-based economy. SENTEC is designed as a sustainable showcase, reflecting the latest advances in solar collection, water conservation, and energy efficiency. Designed by Dewberry and funded by local agencies, SENTEC also received grants from the City of Danville for the LED lighting demonstration, as well as the photovoltaic array on the facility’s roof. The 13.7 kW panels feed the city’s electric grid, showcasing the building as an energy demonstration site. Vegetative roofing, roof rainwater cisterns, cork flooring, and native vegetation support the facility’s sustainable concepts, preserving and supporting energy resources. The building’s high bay area is specifically designed for pilot scale evaluation of the biomass conversion processes and to accommodate process equipment for the bio-based industry. “Constructed with funding from the Virginia Tobacco Commission, SENTEC will be a primary contributor for the development of a bio-based industry in the Tobacco Commission region,” said Liam Leightley, executive director for the IALR. “R&D projects will be pursued that are directed toward the development and introduction of biomass crops, assessment of conversion technologies, development of co-products from conversion processes, and feasibility studies for installing biorefineries in Southern Virginia. SENTEC will be able to transfer knowledge from throughout the world for the benefit of Southern Virginia.”
