Picking up the Pieces: Superstorm
Sandy Debris Management
In October 2012, Superstorm Sandy caused severe and widespread devastation across New Jersey, resulting in extensive
amounts of debris. The agency tasked with clearing the state’s waterways and coastal areas, the New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection (NJDEP), needed assistance clearing debris and capturing costs reimbursable under the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance program.
