North Carolina is pioneering STEM education. A product
of the state's Joining Our Businesses & Schools ( JOBS)
Commission, which was established to tie future jobs
in the state's economy to skills taught in the classroom,
Wake/NCSU STEM Early College High School brings
project-based learning, focused on the National
Academy of Engineering Grand Challenges, to students
underrepresented in the STEM fields. I have had the
pleasure of co-chairing the public magnet school's
business advisory board during its three years of existence,
and am excited to announce that we are furthering the
school's mission by replicating the project-based learning
grand challenges concept and mentoring new schools'
business advisory boards across the state.

Floodplain management does not mean much to
second-graders, but thanks to a series of hands-on
exercises and a short YouTube video, I was able to
explain what it means to live in a floodplain and the risk
involved. During two sessions with my son's elementary
class, I explained what I do as a floodplain mapping
professional and gave them an example of the work I do
by creating a "FIRMette" for the area surrounding their
school. The students made their own maps, learned how
LiDAR data is collected, and even saw how a hydraulic
model works.
