A New Civic Landmark:
The George W. Hawkes Downtown Library
With the opening of the much-anticipated George W. Hawkes Downtown Library, the city of Arlington, Texas, recently
celebrated a new urban landmark designed to serve residents of all ages. The 80,000-square-foot library, which opened in
June, anchors the community's downtown revitalization and is prominently located on a corner site just north of city hall.
The building houses three floors of library space as well as shared event space for 200 people that accommodates library
events as well as Arlington City Council Chamber meetings.
The "Discover" wall animates the first floor with a playful, interactive feature
that divides the children's area from the community "living room."
The Library of Tomorrow
The George W. Hawkes Downtown Library offers
approximately 200,000 print and audiovisual resources,
with dedicated spaces for children, teens, and adult
literacy. Dewberry provided programming, architectural
design, structural engineering, and technology
consulting services for the new facility, which also
includes a landscaped public plaza that welcomes
patrons and serves as a civic meeting place.
The library's first floor features a grand entry, public
commons, and community "living room." The children's
area is also located on the first floor, separated by a
colorful and interactive "Discover" wall with a variety
of reading nooks. Much of the second floor is dedicated
to the teen program, with dynamic lighting and visual
elements that animate the space. This area includes a
study lounge, computing space, and a digital creativity
lab with a STEAM (science, technology, engineering,
arts, math) focus. The "Arlington Reads" and adult
computing areas are also located on the second floor,
encouraging adult literacy and computer skills.

The third floor focuses on Arlington's local culture
and history, genealogy, and the adult reading collection.
Here, patrons can also enjoy an outdoor roof garden that
overlooks nearby parks and green spaces. The local history
research areas overlook the city's historic downtown.
Sustainable and Efficient
With sustainability a clear priority for city administrators
and library staff, the library is designed to meet LEED®
Silver certification standards. The building features a
94KwH roof solar array, two green roof gardens, waterconserving fixtures, and LED lighting. The landscaping
emphasizes native plants and carefully positioned
shade trees, and includes a dry stream bed for water
collection. The building is anticipated to achieve a 37
percent reduction in energy consumption and a savings
of 120,000 gallons of water annually.
