SPOTLIGHT ON THE STAFF

I was the first presenter last year at the Thomas E.
Harrington Middle School Teen Science Café,
which is a national program being implemented
by schools at the local level. It's like an American
Society of Civil Engineers for middle schoolers. I
did a presentation on transportation engineering,
explaining concepts like super elevation and other
aspects of road design, as well as utilities and
environmental issues. We did a challenge activity
where I asked the kids to design missing highway
connections off of an existing intersection. It
was fun to see their minds working to overcome
obstacles. Many of them clearly wanted to learn
more about engineering, and I was glad to tell the
students about my path.

For two years in a row, I have presented on
my profession as a landscape architect at the
career fair at Boonsboro Middle School in
Washington County, Maryland. Many people
have misconceptions about landscape
architecture, so I enjoy exposing students
to the many paths available. They loved
looking at both the artistic and engineered
types of plans I brought along and hearing
about opportunities to spend part of their
workday outside, depending on the career
path. The best part was having students I
had spoken with the previous year tell me
they had decided to pursue a career as a
landscape architect.
