cities with hubs. The ability for regional
affiliates of U.S. network carriers
to fly this type was permitted under
loosening scope clauses in the 1990s
and 2000s. As of the March 2019
Bombardier CRJ Series Program status
report, the largest operators were
American (69), Delta (60), Mesa (45)
and Delta Connection carriers (44), with
the United States accounting for 60.5%
of the operating fleet.
At 118 feet 10 inches, the CRJ900
is 12 feet 10 inches longer than
the CRJ700 and can accommodate
12 additional passengers in highdensity configuration for a maximum
of 90 seats. For faster turnaround,
the CRJ900 was introduced with an
additional service door placed at the aft
starboard side of the fuselage, providing
access for aircraft cleaning and galley
replenishment. CRJ700/900 durability
and damage tolerance testing (DADTT)
has identified a number of structural

fatigue areas including the pressure
floor of the center fuselage and forward
fuselage. In response, Bombardier has
introduced CARE program to incorporate
a group of 10 service bulletins generally
due at 25,000 flight cycles (or above),
which provides structural modifications
to reduce the risk of scheduled
inspection findings to minimize aircraft
downtime and costly repairs.
Last year, Bombardier launched
an improved cabin experience option
branded Atmosphère. Key features
include larger overhead bins to
accommodate oversized roller bags,
a connected cabin (providing email,
text and social media connectivity plus
Wi-Fi streaming and power outlets),
full LED lighting with available mood
lighting effects, the largest window size
in class, larger galley and a passengers
with reduced mobility lavatory option.

Background
The Bombardier Canadian Regional
Jet 900 (CRJ900) was announced in
1999 with first delivery to Mesa Airlines
in February 2003. It is a stretched
derivative of the CRJ700, which was
launched in January 1997 and first
delivered in May 1999. As of March
2019, 436 CRJ900s had been delivered
to 31 airline operators. Of the active
CRJ family members - CRJ550,
CRJ700, CRJ900 and CRJ1000 -
only the CRJ900 and the CRJ550,
which was launched in February, have
backlogs at 51 and 50, respectively,
as of 31 March 2019. The CRJ550
seats 50 in launch customer United's
first/premium economy/economy
configuration and shares the CRJ700's
fuselage and engines. First delivery is
scheduled for the second half of 2019.
