decisions around sustainability and
taxation, both now and in the years
to come.
Jetrader: What has your level of
involvement in ISTAT been, and
what do you see as ISTAT's role in
the industry?
M-LK: ISTAT membership has afforded
me the opportunity to participate in
ISTAT conferences and networking
opportunities around the world. I
gained an insight into a number of
the ISTAT initiatives from my former
colleague, Dean Gerber. The breadth
of reach of an organization across the
aviation industry is really impressive.
Its success is a testament to the time,
effort and resources that members
have committed to the organization.
Jetrader: For young people, and
especially young women, considering

going into aviation, what thoughts or
advice would you give them for how
to approach their careers?
M-LK: When I think of a career in
aircraft leasing, the first words that
come to me are exciting, fast paced
and challenging. It is a sector I have
loved working in and one where being
a woman has never been a drawback
for me.
In the earlier stages of my career,
there were two things I always asked
myself: was I learning, and could I see
the next level? A common theme across
those two questions was mentorship.
This doesn't have to be part of a formal
mentor program, but it needs to be
someone who is willing to invest in
your career, both for the benefit of the
company but also for you.
I have worked closely for most
of the last 10 years with James
Meyler, first when he was chief
commercial officer and now as our
chief executive officer. He has been
a very important mentor for me,
providing encouragement and support.
This was particularly evident when
I was promoted to CFO while on
maternity leave.
At ORIX, it is really encouraging that
we have a number of high-performing
women whom I am privileged to work
with. I am conscious of giving them the
same kind of support on their career
paths as I have enjoyed in my own.
In terms of career development, I
would encourage young professionals
to take on responsibility when offered,
even if it is outside the scope of your
day-to-day role. Take any opportunities
where you get a chance to get involved
in project management; it's a great way
of learning the people and processes
in your organization. It will also likely
result in you being in the room with
senior people when key decisions are
being made.
