The 'E' in ESG
The aviation industry needs to present a
unified argument on the good aviation
provides and the clear and tangible steps
this hard-to-abate sector is taking to
address climate change.

ince the beginning of the year, I have
participated in six webinars on aviation
sustainability; authored an article on
environmental, social and governance
(ESG); been hired by an aviation lessor to
assist on their ESG strategy; and wrote an
analysis on ESG in aviation. The amount
of feedback has been, and continues to be, extraordinary as
airlines, lessors, investors and lenders try to sort through the
confusing landscape for this hard-to-abate sector. As a fund
manager said, " When it comes to ESG, being green isn't black
and white. " When it comes specifically to aviation, it is also
not immediate.

The emphasis of this article is on the collective
messaging, risks and medium- to long-term solutions
for the aviation sector. Not to diminish the social or
governance aspects of ESG, and given limitations on
space, we will focus on the " E, " as this is arguably
the greatest hurdle due to the intense global focus
on emissions.
Aviation is in crisis - and not just because of the
pandemic. As we slowly, hopefully, extricate ourselves from
lockdowns, there is - rightly so - an increasing focus
on ESG and sustainability. The biggest immediate risk to
aviation isn't necessarily lack of investment or government
action (more on that later); it is potentially ourselves.
