T
he GEnx-1B engine
was certified by the
Federal Aviation
Administration
(FAA) in March
2008 and is found
on the Boeing 787
family. It is a technological successor
to the GE90-94B (Boeing 777 Classic)
and features a single-stage fan; a
four-stage low-pressure compressor
(LPC); a 10-stage high-pressure
compressor (HPC); a two-stage
high-pressure turbine (HPT); and a
seven-stage low-pressure turbine
(LPT). Some advancements include
a reduced number of fan blades that
are not life limited; reduced weight
from the composite fan case; improved
emissions; enhanced combustor
durability; and time-on-wing increases.
The GEnx-1B thrust ratings range
64,000-78,000 lbf (pounds force) and
incorporates enhanced technologies
such as a composite fan and fan case;
a lean combustor; and unshrouded HPT
blades. It shares fan, HPC and HPT
commonality with the GEnx-2B engine
found on the 747-8.
GE is committed to program
enhancement with engine and
component durability upgrades;
improvement in on-wing times; and
ultimate life limited part (LLP) targets.
It is also committed to an engine with
fleetwide common configuration,
with new-build improvements being

retrofitted on earlier builds as they
are inducted for first, and second-run
shop visits.
Another consideration is that
like the GE90 family and unlike the
competing engine on the 787 family,
the GEnx-1B is available as a propulsor
only. A propulsor allows for easier
transportation, as it separates the large
fan stator module from the compressor,
turbine and combustor modules. This
feature has proven popular for spare
engine owners who do not have a
requirement for additional fan stators
given they have a longer on-wing
life. This option reduces the cost at
acquisition, and existing operator fan
stators can be used.
Market
The clear market-leading engine for
the 787 program, the GEnx-1B is an
evolving fleet with an average age of
approximately four years. Deliveries
total 1,284 as of June 2021 with
a backlog of 596 (figures exclude
spare engines). GE continue to
increase market share (currently
around 65%) at the expense of the
Rolls-Royce Trent 1000. There are
currently several undecided engine
selections for 787 orders. At a
minimum, Counterpoint expects
Emirates will choose GEnx-1B
engines following an order switch
from 777X to 30 787-9s.
MRO Commentary
The GEnx-1B has proven to be more
reliable in almost every recognized
performance category compared to
the competition: in-flight shutdown
(IFSD), interruptions, total removals
and departure reliability. The superior
performance to date has undoubtedly
caused some airlines to opt for the
GEnx-1B despite prior loyalties, one
example being Air New Zealand. The
engine has not been without problem,
however, but the scale has been
manageable and efficiently rectified
by the OEM. Early ice crystal fan ice
