Across the Globe
From 2017 to 2021, the ISTAT
Foundation funded scholarships for 356
students to complete their aviationrelated
studies at universities worldwide:
88 recipients benefited from dedicated
scholarship programs at universities in
China and Japan and 223 from the main
ISTAT Foundation Scholarship Program.
Although scholarship recipients have
been weighted toward the U.S., Europe,
China and Japan, the ISTAT Foundation
has been actively seeking to expand
opportunities for those from Africa,
South America and other Asia-Pacific
countries through connections made
by ISTAT members. Encouragingly, the
number of participating universities
rose during the time frame, driving an
increase in scholarships each year,
except for 2020, due to the pandemic.
Additionally, the ISTAT Foundation has
provided 45 students with scholarship
funding to participate in the ISTAT
University (ISTAT U) Program, which aims
to equip them with the knowledge and
tools of aviation finance.

A Note from ISTAT Foundation Chair Peter Huijbers
The ISTAT Foundation is very proud to continue to expand on
the " I " in ISTAT, and Joël's article gives a great overview of the
progress of and outlook for the Foundation's Scholarship Program.
In general, the growth of the Foundation's giving programs over
the last 10 years as it relates to diversity and inclusion (D&I) has
indeed been quite good, but not good enough.
With the intent to increase the reach of the ISTAT
Foundation, we have set up a D&I Committee, with Sigthor
Einarsson serving as chair. The committee is tasked with
developing and maintaining a D&I policy, which will consist
of guidelines and best practices for the Foundation's giving
programs, volunteers and leaders.
In parallel, by means of the Development Committee, we
have started discussions with philanthropic entities to fund a
new D&I initiative whereby financial and employment assistance
is provided to students who face certain barriers as they pursue
their dreams in the aviation industry, particularly students in
developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. This
initiative will also explore the opportunity to support refugees
from countries such as Syria, Palestine and Iraq.
As a charitable organization committed to support the
aviation industry, it is important for the ISTAT Foundation to go
beyond the " typical " organizational D&I structure, and I look
forward to sharing results of our efforts in due course.
