are literally hundreds of companies pursuing the goal of a
new class of aircraft, using the electric vertical takeoff
and landing concept as the basis of their business models.
Focus on Sustainability
Since the last FIA in 2018, the word " sustainability " has become even more
prominent across the industry. This was certainly evident at the show, as
exhibitors demonstrated their ideas to help the industry to meet its 2021
commitment of reaching net-zero CO2 by 2050. Around the exhibition halls and
business chalets, conversations frequently revolved around this topic. Associated
strongly with the sustainability initiative are literally hundreds of companies
pursuing the goal of a new class of aircraft, using the electric vertical takeoff
and landing (eVTOL) concept as the basis of their business models. At FIA2022,
two such companies were particularly visible. Vertical Aerospace had a full-size
mock-up of its four-passenger VX4 aircraft on display at its stand in Hall 4, and
Wisk Aero displayed its autonomous two-seater Cora demonstrator. Other eVTOL
developers also had a presence at the show, including Eve, Lilium, Overair and
Supernal. The sheer number of companies pursuing this type of development and
the attraction they appear to hold for investors would seem to guarantee that we
will see more of such companies at future shows.
Orders Committed
Halls and chalets are, of course, where
the business gets done, and while some
observers were disappointed that the
show didn't quite manage the levels of
an " order fest, " it seems dismissive not
to recognize the aircraft commitments
announced at this year's show against
the backdrop of the overall recovery
that the industry is making.
Airbus saw orders for 17 A321neo
from LATAM, as the airline announced
its interest in the A321XLR. EasyJet's
order for 56 A320neo family aircraft
added to the tally, and Delta added a
further 12 A220-300 aircraft. Boeing's
air show included Delta's 100 firm
orders plus 30 options for the 737-10,
777 Partners' firm order for 30 7378200s
as part of a commitment for up
to 66, Qatar's firm order for 25 737-10
aircraft, ACG's announcement as the
previously unidentified customer for
12 737-8s, AerCap's commitment for
five more 787-9s and an MoU for from
Azerbaijan Airlines for another four
787-8s. Boeing also received orders
