ISTAT Jetrader - Autumn 2022 - 26

O
n 29 April 2021,
Michael O'Leary
voluntarily
committed
Ryanair to use a
blend of 12.5%
sustainable
aviation fuel (SAF) in its jet fuel by
2030. At current prices, this could add
up to $1 billion to Ryanair's annual
operating costs. Why would O'Leary,
who has possibly done more than
any other individual in the history of
aviation to lower costs, suddenly decide
to increase his costs?
He is not the only CEO to make such
a commitment; IAG, KLM, Lufthansa,

JetBlue, United and Delta, among
others, have made commitments to use
10% SAF by 2030. EU policymakers
have proposed a mandate requiring SAF
usage. Jet fuel in the EU would need to
contain a minimum percentage of SAF,
increasing from 2% in 2025 to 6% in
2030, and increasing in steps to 63% in
2050. And yet these airlines are making
voluntary commitments in excess of
or close to twice the level of the EU's
proposed mandate.
This, despite SAF being famous for
two things: high cost and scarcity. At a
time when many aviation financiers see
no imminent threat to their investment
from efforts to curb carbon emissions,
what are these airline leaders seeing
that others are not?

Before answering, it is worth
underlining aviation's role as an
objectively positive force in the world.
It's an engine for economic growth and
cultural exchange. According to a study
by the Air Transport Action Group, for
every one person directly employed in
aviation, a further eight indirect jobs
