"The various government departments are delighted to have
a single body to talk to when they're looking to get feedback
on different policy initiatives, as opposed to having 15 or 20
disparate conversations; it's much more efficient on both
sides," Swan says.
But having one voice isn't the only benefit in collaborating
with the Irish government. ALI is able to share the benefits
of the industry to the Irish economy so the government is
encouraged to push mutually helpful initiatives. "There are
5,000 jobs that exist because Ireland is the No. 1 center
for aircraft leasing in the world," Swan says. "There's a
$660 million contribution to the Irish economy every year
through the activities of leasing companies and the support
organizations. These things can be under the radar, so we're
highlighting that great story. We are trying to keep Ireland
as the best and easiest place to base the headquarters of an
aircraft leasing company in the world."

Although aircraft leasing is global in nature, there are unique
aspects of Ireland's position in the industry. "Ireland is a small
country on the edge of the Atlantic that has always had to look
outwards," Swan says. "The people who live here have always
had to think beyond their home market, so it makes us more
open - more open to travel, more open to global business. It's
a central time zone, so you can do business in the Americas
and Asia in your working day, which is very helpful. It's an
English-speaking country in the EU, which is also very helpful."
One of the big challenges is to make sure the country
stays focused. "Ireland is in a strong position, but it also
needs support. The goal of ALI is to make sure we don't
become complacent," Swan says.
Kelly identifies a few other challenges in the industry,
including the global competition from China and Hong Kong;
infrastructure constraints (e.g., housing shortages); the limited
number of secondary school graduates who are prepared for a
path into aviation; and, while some work has been done, there
are still issues with work visas for non-Irish-based employees.
Luckily, it's not hard to find consensus on the core issues
ALI is concerned with. "All the things we're pushing for are
generically beneficial," Swan says. "A single voice. More skills.
Lining up the staff of the future with education programs. More
tax treaty networks. Living and working conditions in Ireland.
They're non-contentious, and I don't see us getting into
contentious areas; that's not what we're about. ALI is about
things that are important for all the leasing companies."

Current Initiatives
In its second main meeting, held in Dublin in April, the topic of
technology and how to utilize it more effectively was a main
point of discussion. "There's a lot of great new technology,
