The first panel of the day was the Airline Panel, which was moderated by Doug
Winter, chief commercial officer of marketing at Aircastle, and included Jude
Bricker, chief executive officer of Sun Country Airlines; Amos Kazzaz, senior vice
president of finance planning and analysis at Air Canada; and Gerry Laderman,
executive vice president and chief financial officer of United Airlines. They discussed
myriad topics, including the coronavirus, the panorama of the North America
landscape, the MAX gap and the pilot shortage.
On the topic of the MAX, Kazzaz admitted it's been a challenge. "We were
operating 24 MAXs a year ago. It's been frustrating for us," he said. "We have 400odd pilots who flew nothing but the MAX, and we weren't able to put them back into
work. We've had to extend leases to keep capacity. We've been able to work through
it, but this coming July we're supposed to have 50 MAXs in our fleet. Dealing with
that disruption has been a puzzle for our crew."
On the topic of the pilot shortage, Laderman talked about United Airlines' new
program called United Aviate, which aims to build the base of young adults heading
in the direction of careers as pilots.
The Freighter Panel was moderated by Dan Pietrzak, director at BlackRock, and
included Robert Convey, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Aeronautical
Engineers; Richard Greener, senior vice president and manager at GECAS Cargo;

Brian McCarthy, vice president of
marketing and sales at Precision
Aircraft Solutions; Stephen Rimmer,
chief executive officer of Altavair; and
Wolfgang Schmid, vice president sales
and marketing at EFW. The discussion
covered the topics of change in density
to payloads, the narrowbody conversion
market, the current feed stock in
engine acquisition prices and regional
cargo jet conversions.
There was another roundtable
during lunch on Day Two, organized
by mba Aviation. This roundtable
focused on managing aircraft
transitions and examined technical,
economic and regulatory variables that
must be addressed in a successful
aircraft transition.
