"I have been able to participate in a number of AWAR luncheons,
both in Dublin and in Singapore. At the first event I went to
several years ago, we discussed unconscious bias, which
really opened my eyes - as it did for everyone else at the
eventĀ - on how widespread it is. I am one of the coleaders of the Women's Network at GE Capital and GECAS,
and unconscious bias has become an area of focus for us.
Unconscious bias takes many forms. For example, a
woman may raise a good point in a meeting and it may
not be acknowledged, but when a male makes the same
suggestion, it is accepted and praised as a 'great idea.' This
is an example of people preferring to take advice from those
who look like them. This is also true in hiring. There's an external
study wherein applications with the same education and experience
were submitted with half having traditionally female names on them and half
traditionally male. The 'female' applicants were rated lower than males in
competence and hireability by the hiring managers.
Another key learning for me has been the importance of partnering within
our business on initiatives to promote and develop a more diverse workplace. I
do not want it to be a women's issue but rather a business issue. We believe a
diverse business is a better business."

"You might say, 'OK, here's Mary in
middle management. Mary is sharp, she
really listens and, when she gives her
opinion, she has really creative ideas.'
"What are the jobs that Mary could
take on? What are the experiences she
needs or the projects that we need
to make sure she manages so that
she develops the skills that in five or
seven years when we say 'it's time to
fill an executive position,' we can look
at Mary and say 'she's prepared'?"
AndersonĀ asks.
"You see this all the time," she
continues. "CEOs say one of their direct
reports is leaving and 'it'd be great if
we could put in a woman, but there's
nobody that has the skills.' Well, that's
because you didn't prepare for that."

Focus on Measurement
From the beginning, Anderson and
Barta knew that in order to justify
their work, they had to have metrics.
"We loosely measured our success by
engagement and participation in our
