The CF-100 Fighter
As the Cold War began in the late
1940s, the fear was that if a new
war arose between the Soviet Union
and the Western democracies, the
Soviets might send fleets of longrange bombers from Siberia over the
pole, threatening Canada and the
United States. Ironically, the expected
bombers would have been carbon
copies of the Boeing B-29, of which
more than 800 were manufactured in
the USSR's Tupolev factory between
1949 and 1952. The Soviets had
reverse engineered the Tu-4 from three
B-29s that had made forced landings
near Vladivostok after attacking
Japanese targets in Manchuria. In a
one-way mission, they might get as far
as Toronto. To meet that threat, Canada
would require a fast, jet-propelled,
twin-engine, long-range, all-weather
fighter/interceptor.
If war were to break out, the new
fighter aircraft's mission would be to
intercept enemy bombers far to the
north before they got even close to
any Canadian cities. And all-weather,
day-and-night capability was essential
considering that northern Canada in the
winter can be nasty, deadly cold and
unceasingly dark, so a single-engine
configuration was out of the question.

Developing and producing its own aircraft meant
that the money would be earned by Canadian workers
in Canadian factories using Canadian resources, and the
taxes paid would also stay in the country.
While Canada might have purchased
fighter jets from the United Kingdom or
the USA, neither country could offer an
aircraft suited to the harsh Canadian
environment. Moreover, even though
Canada has an area roughly the same
as the lower 48 states, it had less than
one-tenth the population. Consequently,
the idea of buying a large fleet of new
aircraft with the necessary capabilities,
even if they existed, could be a costly
proposition for Canada. But developing
and producing its own aircraft, while
still costly, meant that the money
would be earned by Canadian workers
in Canadian factories using Canadian

resources, and the taxes paid would
also stay in the country, making the
fighter project politically feasible.
Gradually, the Avro Canada
workforce began to rebuild. Besides
Canadians, many of the British workers
who had left Canada and gone back
to the United Kingdom after the war
found almost no available housing due
to bombings during the war. Those who
married and started families often had
to move in with their parents or in-laws.
Consequently, some skilled workers
returned to Canada with their families
where they found jobs again at Malton
in the lateĀ 1940s.

Steel Car, had produced aircraft for the
war effort. At its height, the factory had
a workforce of about 10,000 men and
women, producing Lancaster heavy
bombers and bomber trainers. But when
U.K.-based Hawker-Siddeley acquired
Victory at the end of 1945, renaming
it A.V. Roe Canada (aka Avro Canada),
only about 300 peopleĀ remained.
Avro Canada initially focused on
three prospects: a new fighter for the
Royal Canadian Air Force that became
the CF-100 project; a new transport
aircraft for Trans-Canada Airlines to be
designated C-102, but soon called the
Avro Jetliner; and a research facility to
study gas turbines, later to be named
Orenda Engines.
