FROM THE PRESIDENT

I
sincerely hope you and your
families are well. I am writing
this note on the heels of
our recent ISTAT Americas
conference in beautiful San
Diego. The event was one
of the best attended ISTAT
conferences in our history, with over
2,000 attendees. Special thanks go to
the planning committee - led by Peter
Blakeney of Arena Aviation, Mike Warner
of Boeing, Sarah Aoun of Airbus, Chris
Beers of Aircastle and Kostya Zolotusky
of iFLI - for their tremendous efforts in
putting the event together.
Much of their focus in planning the
conference centered upon the retreat
of the recent Omicron surge and the
hope that we had finally gotten past the
COVID-19 lockdowns and would find our
way back to some degree of normalcy.
Sadly, our hopes of normalcy were
dashed with the outbreak of hostilities
in Ukraine. The committee quickly

pivoted and refocused its attention to
the Ukrainian crisis, the impact it was
having on aviation and the attendant
uncertainties arising therefrom. We
were, however, not simply focused on
the challenges the crisis is generating
for our industry. Given the scope of the
humanitarian crisis, ISTAT, along with

the ISTAT Foundation, also embarked
on a campaign to raise $1 million
toward humanitarian relief. With
your help, we are well on our way to
achieving that goal.
To close ISTAT Americas, I had
the pleasure of presenting the 2022
ISTAT Award to Rafael Alonso at the
President's Gala Dinner. Rafael, known
for his pioneering spirit, enhanced
the Airbus presence, evolution and
influence throughout Latin America
and the Caribbean in his various
roles with the company and was
directly involved in more than 2,000
aircraft sales. Indeed, some describe
Rafael as being the soul of Airbus
development throughout that region.
ISTAT could not be prouder to have
him be the recipient of our most
prestigious award.
We also had the honor of having
our newest ISTAT Professional
Development Program (PDP) graduates
from the Americas class join us at
the conference. Thirty-four young
professionals completed their PDP
training, which had sessions in
Chicago, Seattle and New York and
culminated with the final class in
San Diego at the conference. Our
special thanks to PwC, Boeing and
Goldman Sachs for their considerable
contributions to making this class a
success. The European class for 2022
is underway, and Americas 20222023
will start in a few months. We
aim to have our first class in Asia in
2023. The PDP classes present an
unparalleled forum for professionals
to gain insight and knowledge into
the broader workings of our industry
