Jetrader: Who has had the greatest
influence on your career?
CL: There have been many people I
have been fortunate enough to work
with, past and current, who have
acted as great mentors to me. So
while it is difficult to choose only one,
I would have to say it was my first
boss, Catherine Deane. Catherine was
the law firm partner I was assigned
to when I started my training in
McCann FitzGerald Solicitors, and
her expansive knowledge, insight
and passion for the aviation industry
solidified my desire to be part of it
and greatly influenced my career
path. That early guidance has led me
from qualifying as an associate in the
aviation finance group, to an in-house

Jetrader: What do you like most
about the aviation industry?
Caroline Lusby (CL): Its truly global
nature - the industry is centered on
connecting people from around the
world, and to be part of such a business
provides immense opportunities to
work with, and learn from, people
from a broad variety of cultures and
backgrounds with a diverse range
of skill sets and outlooks. The ISTAT
Professional Development Program,
which I am currently attending, has
brought this to the fore, consisting of
a group of talented people from across
the aviation ecosystem who are globally

minded, ambitious and passionate
about what they do. Despite its global
reach, the industry is paradoxically
quite a close-knit community, which is
part of its appeal.
Jetrader: What is the most
challenging part of your profession?
CL: Currently the most challenging
part of my profession is keeping up
with the constantly evolving fallout
from the COVID-19 crisis and the
deluge of information as the industry
tries to navigate its way through the
pandemic. While this dynamism has
brought many new challenges, and an
legal role in Avolon, to my current role
in the Avolon OEM team.
Jetrader: What was your first job?
CL: I studied law in Queen's University
Belfast, and my first job was as a trainee
lawyer at McCann FitzGerald Solicitors
in Dublin. I was randomly assigned to
the aviation finance group for my first
rotation, so I could easily have ended up
a litigation lawyer! I am very thankful
I found the aviation industry and the
role that I am in today where I am
challenged, constantly learning and work
with brilliant people in a collaborative
and engaging environment.
