For example, we have seen a reduction of 53% of carbon dioxide from 1990 to 2018.
Ultimately, Lange said, "We're a bunch of people who habitually don't like change.
Any change is perceived as risk. What we need to do as an industry is be lucid about
the direction of change."
Goodhead agreed, saying we have to accept and acknowledge there is an issue
with climate change, but we also have to solve that challenge together. "Over the
next 20 years, society's demand for air travel is expected to increase by 4-5% each
year," he said. "We have a responsibility to cater to this growth in a sustainable way
with innovative technologies and engineering excellence."
The Airline Panel followed, which was moderated by Karl Griffin, CEO of Genesis,
and included Jude Bricker, CEO and president of Sun Country; Vitolds Jakovlevs,
chief financial officer of Air Baltic; Shahe Ouzounian, chief operating officer of
Chapman Freeborn; Ignacio Pascual de Riva, CEO of Galistair; and Tamer Yuzuak,
senior vice president of finance and fleet management at Pegasus Airlines. The
panel presented a high-level overview of the business they're working in.
They discussed the forecasted headwinds and tailwinds over six to 12 months
(labor, fuel and competition); how they reduce costs at an airline; and how they are
addressing pilot training issues.
The inaugural New Technology Panel was moderated by Irena Badelska, board
member of Advancing Women in Aviation Roundtable (AWAR), and included Daniela
Lohwasser, head of research and technology at Airbus; Michael Rhead, legal
director of aerospace at Deloitte Legal; and David Swan, chief operating officer
at SMBC Aviation Capital. They discussed the short-, medium- and long-term
impact of new technologies. Badelska emphasized that the industry needs to focus
on sustainability, regulation and transparency. With the global climate strike just
behind us (it occurred on the Friday before ISTAT EMEA), she said it is important to
