crashed, and it was left that way so as
not to delay the work to get the aircraft
ready to circumnavigate the globe in
the summer of 1939. But Boeing was
not quick enough. The aircraft was
delivered in July, but Germany invaded
Poland on 1 September, with the USSR
following on 17 September, making a
record-breaking attempt untenable.
With that, the cabin tanks were
removed, and Hughes gave the airplane
a luxurious, 15-passenger interior
with a bar, a kitchen, a buffet, two
lavatories, sleeping quarters and even a
powder room for the ladies. Along with
the conversion work, the new, larger
tail was installed, and the engines
were changed back to the same types
as on the TWA fleet in place of the
nonstandard, uncertified engines
intended for the round-the-world flight.
