Reach Out

I

hope you and your families
are healthy and well. In the
Winter Issue of Jetrader, we
normally look back at the
year just gone; however,
2020 seems to be one that
we all want to forget about.
Unfortunately, the impact of the
pandemic - both economically
and socially - will be with us for
a considerable time. The strong
economic recovery we have
witnessed since the global financial
crisis is at best under threat and
at worst in danger of creating a
significant recessionary period for
a sustained period of time. While
aviation and the servicing industries
that surround it have certainly taken
the brunt of the initial meltdown,
hardship is being faced on a much
broader scale.
But it's not just the economy;
the pandemic has created a social
chasm. It has become more and more

challenging to visit loved ones and meet
people in person, be they friends, family
or colleagues. We're now all too familiar
with the term " second wave, " and with
large portions of the globe still under
lockdown, the in-person meetings and
chats that were so commonplace in our
lives now become difficult to hold.

Winter in the Northern Hemisphere
brings its own challenges. While most
were able to address the pandemic
and the limitations it forced upon us
in the warmer months, winter will
be harder. Long, dark days and cold
evenings pose emotional challenges
at the best of times, but adding to it
the inability to meet people in person
presents a new danger. While we have
all been trying to take care of our
immediate family, we should spend
some time to reach out to others.
The pandemic poses an additional
medical concern, which is one of
mental health. This is so important
and something many people take for
granted. It's in times like these that
family and friendship need to be at
their strongest. When was the last
time you checked in on someone? It
may be just picking up the phone or
looking over the garden wall to say
hello, but it is important we reach
out to those who may be in a more
vulnerable position.
Personally, I have dealt with
these challenges by getting back into
sport - cycling and swimming more,
utilizing my time not traveling to do
fun stuff with my family. However, it is
hard. All but immediate family remains
only contactable through some sort
of computer application. It has made
me reflect and start reaching out to
people on a more regular basis to ask
how are they doing. I never thought
I would see myself doing a Brian
Flanagan impersonation while looking
at a computer screen and chatting
to friends. I suppose desperate
times call for desperate measures,
but I am still not sure about my
mixology capabilities.
