the audience thought by 2023; for long
haul, 74% believed 2024 and beyond.
The panelists, however, thought the
audience was being a bit pessimistic.
They thought 2022 for short haul and
2023 for long haul.
Following the poll, each panelist
discussed how government policy
has impacted their company's road
to recovery. Pittkin said it's been
challenging and frustrating but also that
lessors have been there for easyJet.
Mateu agreed about her relationship
with lessors during the pandemic,
saying, " Our relationship with the
lessors is even stronger than it was. "

Popp said the Lufthansa Group was
grateful for the German government's
support but understands it's a loan
to be paid back and not a gift. " Our
business is based on long-term
relationships rather than short-term
deals. This turned out to be a valuable
asset during the crisis; that's why we're
confident we come out of the crisis even
stronger than before, " he said.
The next panel, Impact of the
Pandemic on the African and Middle
Eastern Region, was moderated by
Nick Fadugba, chief executive officer
of African Aviation Services Ltd.,
with panelists Joseph Ward, sales
and marketing for EMEA at Goshawk;
Mamoun Kuzbari, chief commercial
officer at Novus Aviation Capital;

Ward began by explaining that
the economic impact of the pandemic
in Africa is huge, with tourism a
significant part of many African
countries' GDP, so the expectation is
airlines will recover when COVID-19
lifts. Kuzbari talked about the strength
of the Middle Eastern market due to
government support but, for the African
market, the jurisdiction risk is high.
The Finance Panel followed,
moderated by James Kelly, tax partner
at KPMG, with panelists Mark Streeter,
